One of The Masters Of Succession’s several offerings Saturday at The City of Water Day Festival on Governors Island was trim and collect hair to add to the massive collections which help absorb oil spills. We had lots of enthusiastic donations in the 5 hours but not that many. Those that got a trim we thank you for soaking up some oil.
- EACH sq ft of matt made from a pound of hair sponges up 1 quart of oil and can be reused 100s of times.
- Hair boom sits lower than a synthetic boom
- Hair holds on to the oil, synthetic releases the oil over many hours
- 50% of the oil in our waterways is from households illegally dumping used motor oil
- One quart of oil can contaminate ONE MILLION gallons of DRINKING water
- 2600 average number of oil spills each year.
- 300,000 pounds of hair and fur are cut daily in the US
