MoS Collective was invited to offer workshops at Pedal Power Concert by Shira, one of our Brunch Bokahsi and Mud Ball workshop participants! They needed the whole system to be represented. The bike pedaling energy-food waste-soil building-food producing-spiral. The food eating humans make power for their music with bikes, breathing, microbes and fresh water!

The food waste was put to use by MoS Collective participant Shig Matsukawa and new fermented food waste teacher Elizabeth.

Elizabeth taught the “Fuel Table” volunteers to ask bikers to put their food scraps in his white bucket then sprinkle fermentation starter on their contribution. Looking at the results everyone gets a gold star. The scraps will be sealed for 2 weeks while they ferment at the El Sol Brinllante Garden on 12th St. (no rats btw there).

In 2 weeks it will be ready for the worm bin or for trenching in the ground as vibrant fertilizer.

The food grown there is part of a comparison study. Which is better for fertilizing? Fermented food or  traditional thermophilic compost made by expert composters at Earth Matter on Governors Island. (Seriously super nice compost they make).

They are growing a variety of veggies. We are looking forward to the taste comparison!

We did a taste comparison last fall. We might be biased… the fermented fertilizer carrots were sweeter, the leaves of all the veg were shiny and more vital. They produced more yield in all cases. HOWEVER, the test was not with Earth Matter’s compost. So this year will be tastier all around!

Keat enticing people interested in mud balls and fermenting food waste.  2 pages of enthusiasm!

MUD BALLS for NYFA!

Miki, another talented Brunch, Bokashi and Mud Ball participant, proposed mud balls to a NYFA project ‘Seeding the CIty”. I think it is called. Surprise by her it was accepted! She called us for help and we enthusiastically accepted. Shig and I helped make Activated EM for her event, then we made the mud balls on Sunday at Pedal Power NYC E=H2O. 200 balls were made in less than 2 hours with the efficient help of Tim and Miki working side by side answering questions and teaching the guests. Keat offered hand massages and palm reading (she is accidentally good at palm reading). We had more soil but we ran out of fermented starter. Next, I make more fermented starter (I’m using bran) for the July 30 workshop and throwing! Miki paid 10$ in advance for a pound  .. my first sale.

BTW: if you want to order some fermentation starter I am making batches. Contact MoS Collective. It is $10 a pound and a pound will last months– 2, 3. 4. 5  months ?

If you brew beer or roast your own coffee in big batches Contact MoS. We will use it to make fermented starter. You will be part of whole system thinking!

Sunday also happened to be the Gay Pride Parade conveniently right after same sex marriage was approved.  This is important case for fresh water needs the same giant support for No Fracking.   What if the millions at Gay Pride paraders had also “no fracking” signs to hold up.

Our work space was in front of this very nice and very busy water fountain (photo below) all day. This made me appreciate the water we have rushing out of our faucets (then in a fraction of a second from clean to dirty over to the waste water treatment facility ).

Imagine if water came to us poisoned already? Water is already more important than oil and gas. Why risk water and food. We have to protect it like it is our life and future or it will be taken away.. like all good things in this feast or famine world. New Yorkers want the best energy choice not gas and petroleum from a 1920’s turn away from community into possibly  less caring lifestyles. May old- energy run out before we have no air, water and soil left. May we ferment mushrooms and microbes and use chips off stalactites, wear soft warm fabric, harness potent energy, strong building materials and the fastest healing tinctures!

In a parallel civilization under sea there are no labels that say “keep away from children” or “Do not get on skin or eyes or call emergency if swallowed”.  All their products including packaging are going back into the living system. Conversely the labels say “please rub in eyes for clear vision and drink for health”.
