I have never heard of Neva Rockefeller Goodwin, who is known for her (guessing Neva is female identified person) shareholder action at ExxonMobil that intended to help the company anticipate and take leadership in ushering in a post-carbon economy. Dr. Goodwin’s remarks on Oct 28th.2010 to an All-party Parliamentary Group were based on a paper, “A New Economics for the Twenty-first Century,(click for link) which is based on the need for new kinds of economic thinking to meet our current environmental and social challenges. (The earliest bibliographical reference on this link is 1958 but mostly are in the early 2000’s.)

Mobil, before it was part of Exxon, bought Reston, Va’s property from Gulf Land Development Corporation in the 1970’s. Gulf previously bought it from Mr. Simon, the founder, in 1966, and then soon after fired him in 1967. The new village and entire plan, as it was originally conceived, stood for many of the culture changes mentioned here. I wonder if the companies moving their businesses to Reston, then and now, are of this new economic mind. The early residents struggled to keep its 1964 ideals after Simon was fired. They did a lot of good because Reston is still an interesting place compared to many towns. People love living in Reston. Are the current settlers aware of the political determination the early settlers had while trying to maintain the ideas of this place. Early Restonians were passionate and engaged fully in their new town. Documentary interviews now are critical because these pioneers are passing away.

Just saying, ExxonMobil has some roots in Reston before their land purchase in from Gulf. Why not now in 2008 carry out some of Dr. Goodwin’s vision in Reston. For instance, EM-1 might support the watershed remediation efforts. Maybe they could even support the funding of “Raising Reston”, a film on Mr. R.E. Simon Jr’s bold experiment.  It would be a nice education on new economics to ignite students to exert their idealism and daringness to lead by example. How to be radically idealistic like Reston was in 1964.  Dr. Goodwin’s pitch may be too risky for many. Not everyone can afford to be as bold as a Rockefeller I suppose.

2009-Lake Anne permaculture Master Plan, DD Maucher PDC

in 2009 for my permaculture design certificate instead of redesigning my house property or apartment or community garden I took on the plan of the entire village of Lake Anne. It is based on an anthropocentric ecological economic model – Permaculture Design. The 1 to 3, 5, and 15-year plans are magical utilizing integrity and passion of the creative utopianites that might decide to move there if the right someone started this plan. If the plan were to be carried-out the plaza would succeed in revitalizing on a fraction of the budget.. not in 5 or 15 years but starting today. It is the slow economy plan which creates a people ecology of joyful resilience with no need to wait. But there are no people like this to do the job.  Restonian Mr Pat Kane’s Town Planning School would be the right place for this kind of education.
