La Ville en Vert, by the Montreal Urban Ecology Centre, has  a project where renters together plan, design, and renovate their neighborhoods to reduce urban heat islands — white roofs, trees, plants.

This is a fun project for MoS to start partner maybe with ecological architects and landscapers and  (one at least) composting programs in the projects.

Usually in low income areas but how about with the high income hoods.  Everyone is concerned with the environment around their apts. Nice neighborhoods in NYC are not as green as the East Village which has many community gardens.  So the upper east-west siders might get in to this if branded correctly — that goes for any socioeconomic class. Plus If people of means could pay for the workshop and hire their gardeners to do the work = more jobs , more volunteers for greening NYC. The affordable workshops can pay for the free ones in the projects. A win win.
