Riverkeeper: Help Ensure Gowanus Cleanup Includes Toxic and Sewage Overflows

“Help Ensure Gowanus Cleanup Includes Toxic and Sewage Overflows

Riverkeeper and our Brooklyn partners celebrated the Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to include sharp reductions in sewage overflows as part of the proposed Superfund cleanup targeting toxic waste in the Gowanus Canal. Tackling combined sewage overflow (CSO) discharges, which typically occur during rain and wash high volumes of untreated sewage and other contaminants into the canal, is essential, particularly given the results of Riverkeeper’s water quality tests on the Gowanus. Vocal public support for this cleanup strategy was instrumental—we need to make sure EPA follows through on its laudable plan.
